The Rumble Down Under

Looks like Richard Foote won’t be on Howard Rogers’ Christmas card list for much longer (see the comments).

  1. I disagree with the nuance of Richard’s position on some things. I haven’t suggested he’s technically wrong (quite the opposite), but I thing he’s overlooking some practicalities of implementation, that’s all. Sure, he’s started tossing around the tired line that “I have more experience than you” and making little gibes about me dropping indexes accidentally as if I were incompetent, but you’d have to ask him why he felt the need to do that, not me. It’s not something I worry about, in any event.

Meanwhile, I do think characterising any of that as a ‘rumble’ or something trivially personal that would provoke Christmas card list reprisals is trivialising an important issue: where does the line between technical precision and practical reality get drawn?

Whilst it’s great someone writes a 166-page powerpoint to explain the intracacies of indexes, and whilst there is definitely an audience of specialists for that sort of thing, are we expecting the quotidian DBA to digest all of that before being able to manage indexes (for the most part) appropriately? I’d certainly hope not.

I think we can all disappear up our own backsides in a flurry of technical wizardry if we’re not careful… and in the process be of no practical help to anyone!
